That sublime theme of living life to the fullest even if there isn’t much time left to live finds a retelling in Nagesh Kukunoor’s somewhat good to middling tale of a compulsive gambler and chain smoker who discovers the secret to a happy life while counting down his last days to death. Aashayein, a bit delayed and staid, isn’t intended as a tear-jerker for kerchief-friendly audiences. It’s rather a subtle, slow, laidback cinematic experience that tugs at your heart now and then and leaves you in a state of sweet melancholy.
Rahul (John Abraham), a reckless gambler who can put all his life’s earnings at stake in a single bet, would not have been what he’s if not for his loving, caring, doting girlfriend Nafisa (Sonal Sehgal). But life plays a cruel joke when he’s diagnosed with lung cancer and told that he’s got only three months left to live. With his days numbered, Rahul gives a lion’s share of his gambling wins to his girlfriend, who actually wants to stick by him until the inevitable end, and goes all by himself to live in a hospice at a scenic location next to a beach. There, at the hospice, he meets an assorted bunch of terminally ill characters, racing against time like him, who change Rahul’s perspective on life and how it ought to be lived.
Girish Karnad, a regular in Kukunoor’s films plays an elderly who’s lost his speech; Farida Jalal somewhat overplays her character of a high class ex prostitute who’s now HIV positive and therefore shunned by many at the hospice for fear of contracting the deadly virus. Anaitha Nair pitches in a terrific performance as a cancer-stricken teen who has the hots for Rahul. And there’s also the child artiste Ashwin Chitale playing a spirited character full of life’s wisdoms too early for his age.
John throws himself completely into his character and delivers a performance worth noting. But is it his best? We doubt. Sonal Sehgal shows the promise of a good actress in her.
Aashayein has a number of poignant moments, including one in which John and Anaitha are shown watching Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film Anand, that moving ode to the spirit of living to the fullest from a protagonist facing death. The reference obviously has a resonance with the film’s theme, but Kukunoor wisely abstains from cashing on it for a lump-in-the-throat moment. There’s also a fantasy sequence in which John, a fan of Indiana Jones, dresses up as the adventurer - with fedora, whip and khakis et al. The sequence stands out as a blur between the protagonist’s dream and reality.
Aashayein has more such engaging instances, but the film unspools at a pace that may be a tad too slow for many audiences. There’s no in-your-face melodrama, no mawkish sentimentality; just subdued interplay of emotions as the protagonist learns some important lessons of life from the dying.

It is A.D. 117 and the Roman garrisons are struggling to contain the Picts, the Celtic inhabitants of the Scottish Highlands. The Picts under their king, Gorlacon, are perfecting guerilla warfare and are eliminating Roman outposts one by one. Centurion Quintus Dias is the only survivor of a Pictish raid and is taken prisoner. In the meantime, the Roman governor of Britannia wants to obtain favour with the central administration, hoping to secure a transfer back to the comforts of Rome. He dispatches the Ninth Legion to the front under General Titus Flavius Virilus, providing him with a mute female Brigantian scout, Etain.
As the legion marches north, they encounter and save Dias, who has escaped. Etain betrays the legion to Gorlacon: the Romans walk into a trap and are annihilated. Dias, with six others, elude death and capture. They learn that Virilus has been taken prisoner and set out to rescue him. They find the Pictish settlement and sneak in at night, but fail to break the general's chains. As they retreat, Thax kills Gorlacon's young son. The next morning, after the dead boy is burned, the general is given a sword and made to duel with Etain, who kills him.
The seven decide to return south via a long detour over the mountains, while Etain with a Pict detachment are sent on horseback to track and kill them, in revenge for the king's son. They eventually catch up with the fugitives, who have to jump off a cliff and into a stream. One is killed by arrows while two separate, pursued by wolves. Dias and his best fighter attempt a night raid on the Pictish camp, while Etain and her warriors do the same. Several men are killed. Dias and his two followers happen upon a hut in the forest and befriend Arianne, who lives there. She shelters them and when Etain comes, she confronts her while the Romans hide under the floorboards. The next morning they leave Arianne and find the closest garrison abandoned: an order on a wall informs them that Roman troops have retreated south, to Hadrian's Wall. As they see Etain approach, they set up a trap inside the fort. A battle ensues, Dias kills Etain, and he and one wounded companion emerge victorious. By chance they reunite with one of their lost companions, who earlier killed Gorlacon's son, and wounded another Roman soldier to leave as bait for a pack of wolves hunting them. Upon reaching Hadrian's Wall, the lost companion worries Dias, who says that he will report his crimes and the two men fight with Dias as the victor. Dias' other companion, in Pictish clothing, is shot by Roman soldiers by mistake. When Dias enters the camp he reports the situation to the governor. The governor has decided to have all Ninth Legion veterans killed, so that his record is not tainted by a military failure. The governor's daughter is trusted with making sure that Dias is also killed. Dias evades the attempt on his life and returns to Arianne in the forest.

In the Movie Sye Aata: Shankar Babai (Kota) and Pandit (Shiva Prasad) are the rival gangsters ruling the Hyderabad. Their primary duty is to dominate over each other by killing each others team members.
Durga Malleshwari (Charmi) runs a dance school in Vizag and along with her team (Omkar’s Aata participants), she arrives in Hyderabad to win the reality dance show ‘Sye Aata’ of Omkar. (Omkar made his appearance in good number of frames as childhood friend of Charmi). Omakr arranges the boarding of Durga & team besides the shared den of Shankar Babai and Pandit.
Very soon, Durga impresses both the gangsters with her brave attitude. In the mean time Pandit’s son, Panda Mahadev (Ajay) falls in love with Durga and quickly Shanka Babai’s son is killed in a pub. To take revenge on Pandit for loss of his son, Shankar Babai kidnaps all the team members of Durga blackmailing her to kill both Pandit and his son Panda Mahadev.
Durga accomplishes her task by not only by killing Pandit and Panda Mahadev, even she finishes Shankar Babai. What was rivalry between Durga and these gangsters? Who Durga actually is? Why did she play this ‘Sye Aata’ with villains is revaled in a final flashback which ends the movie.
Values of the Movie Sye Aata: Surely this story dates back to years old and Bhasha Sri’s work on story and dialogues looked mediocre. Director KRK Pawan concentrated more on elevating Charmi and he was almost there in well utilising her energy. Script was plain with expected lines of narration. Music by Devisri Prasad was good, especially background he scored more marks. Camerawork by J. Prabhakar Reddy was a bit dull while Editing by Nandamuri Hari was abrupt at many stages. Production values of Frames Entertainments and Nalluri Rajasekhar were good. Perfomance wise, it was a show of Charmi throughout. As movie is clubbed with dance competition, Charmi has got an opportunity to once again repeat ‘Maha Maha’ kind of movements. Looks wise Charmi was eloquent while performance wise Durga Malleshwari was rugged with enough mass tinge (Vizag Kaththi). Kota repeated his regular modulations and his body language steals the show. Shiva Prasad was okay. Ajay has got a role that is a mix of humor with villainy and he was good. Remaining ‘Aata’ players (Mounika and others) along with Master Bharath made heavy noise on the screen. Prabhakar, Suman Shetty, Rao Ramesh, Chalapathi Rao, Ali, Naazar and others were apt.
Out of the Movie Sye Aata: Director well utilised the image of Charmi to pull audience to theatres. With low publicity and awaited release, Charmi may satisfy audience to some extent. But, the regular and beaten story line and simple narration may serve as a drawback. Ali’s touch of humor as Nanna Chandrasekhar (similar to choreographer Amma Rajasekhar) with ‘Ghazini’ shades was hilalrious. Child participants of ‘Aata’ dance show should have enjoyed this different experience with Charmi. Omkar, the man with vision better utilised the team in his hand. Devisri Prasad’s work in songs like ‘Sye Aata (Title Song), My Name is Malleeshwari and Gajjela Gurram’ was rocking.
If entire first half was a show of Charmi with establishment of gangwars and comedy from children and Ali; second half was little dragged yet finds the ground with Charmi revealing her identity and purpose behind her Sye Aata. Charmi’s charm, Kota’s action, Aata participants energy, patches of comedy are plus points while regular story, routine narration, lack of interesting moments make ‘Sye Aata’ an inspid show.
